1) Special Invitation from ANC to become a sponsor of Lansing Premiere of Craftsman Style: The Movie

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Craftsman Style: The Movie, a new documentary that tells the story of a local veteran contractor turned citizen-filmmaker, and his two-year journey to restore a house on Lansing’s Eastside, will have its Lansing premiere at LCC’s Dart Auditorium.

Made by local filmmaker Shane Hagedorn, Craftsman Style provides a detailed account of the rebuilding work done by Eastside restorationist Dave Muylle and his fellow craftsmen. Best described as “This Old House” for regular people, the film explores how this type of renovation provides a new model for home construction in urban America, one in which wonderful old houses are not simply torn down and replaced but are restored to their former glory, a practice that saves valuable natural resources while also honoring the past. The film was an Official Selection in the 2009 Muskegon Film Festival and has been entered into many other film festivals around the state and country.

Hosted by the Allen Neighborhood Center, the film will premiere at Lansing Community College’s Dart Auditorium, September 18th, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Tickets will go on sale by the end of August, but you or your organization may want to become a more significant part of this amazing evening by becoming a sponsor. Before the premiere, event sponsors will be invited to a “Pre-Film Reception and Home Tour of 124 Regent Street,” the Muylle house featured in the film, from 5 PM to 6:30 PM. Please consider sponsorship opportunities (DOC), and let us know whether you or your organization would like to become involved. All proceeds will go to the Allen Neighborhood Center, a hub for community revitalization and activities that promote the health, safety, and stability and economic well-being of individuals, their families, and community stakeholders on Lansing’s Eastside.

We will be talking about the options available and the consequences of the budget cuts.

I know that many residents of the 68th District are keenly interested in the ongoing budget negotiations. I hope that you’ll be able to join me on Thursday, August 27, at 6:00 p.m. in the Governor’s Room at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave. For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact my office at (517) 373-0826, or by e-mail at JoanBauer@house.mi.gov.

6) Housing Forum: Home Protection for Seniors and Others Facing Foreclosure

Thursday, September 24, Noon-2 p.m., Cooley Center – Lobby, 300 S. Capitol Ave.

HELP! I NEED A HOUSING LIFELINE!

Presenters: Florise Neville-Ewell (Associate Professor, Cooley Auburn Hills Campus);

Lorray Brown (Lead Attorney, Michigan Foreclosure Prevention Project); and

Curtis Hertel, Jr. (Ingham County Register of Deeds), Professor Kimberly O’Leary (Director of Sixty Plus, Inc.); L. Patricia Mock (Cooley Visiting Professor); Margaret M. Philpot (Kitch Law Firm); and the Sixty Plus, Inc. Community Outreach Committee are facilitating the housing forums. Lester Stone is the pastor of the church hosting the community event.

Sixty Plus, Inc. received a $1,000 grant from the Kitch Law Firm to address home protection for seniors. The grant funds forums covering foreclosure prevention and predatory lending. A panel of attorneys and other professionals familiar with the housing and mortgage industries will address ways of helping people protect their homes from foreclosure. Seniors with home equity are prime targets for scams and frequently lose their homes as a result of predators that strip the equity for profit through foreclosure.
