2) Eastside Parks Master Planning
The City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department re-scheduled a public meeting to receive constituent input for improvements and projects the community would like to see implemented into their neighborhood parks through the Parks 5-Year Master Plan. This meeting will discuss Ward 1 Parks and City Wide projects, but is not inclusive to only Ward 1 residents.
This meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 30 from 7-9 p.m. at Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster Avenue. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can take an on-line survey. This survey will only take a couple of minutes, but will provide a great deal of information to the Department as to what improvements residents would like to see in their parks.
3) Recycle Seasonal Gardening and Landscaping Pots & Trays The Regional Recycling Coordinating Committee (R2C2) and Van Atta’s Greenhouse is pleased to announce a special collection event to recycle pots and trays generated from seasonal gardening and landscaping activities. The event will be held at Van Atta’s Greenhouse (9008 Old M 78 Haslett 48840) on September 30th from Noon to 6:00 p.m. All types and sizes of plastic potting containers will be accepted including flats, plug trays and cell packs. All items may not be stamped with a recycling symbol on the bottom. However the following types of plastics are accepted: #2 HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), #5 PP (Polypropylene), and #6 PS (Polystyrene).
Residents from throughout the region are encouraged to participate. It is very important to prepare materials correctly. Items should be free of dirt and debris and rinsed if possible. Items should be stacked according to size, type of container and according to the number located on the bottom of the container. Please note, not all containers are stamped with a number, but are acceptable, as in the case of flats, shuttle trays, cell packs and plug trays.
It will take quite a bit of effort to package items for transport to be recycled. Residents are strongly encouraged to follow collection guidelines or material can not be accepted. For more information contact the Clinton County Department of Waste Management at waste@clinton-county.org or 989-224-5186.
4) Jack Duvall, Power & Principle in Civil Resistance: Gandhi for the 21st Century
Each year around the time of Gandhi’s birthday, the Asian Studies Center presents the Kapur Endowment Lecture. This year, our guest speaker is Jack DuVall, President and Founding Director of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. Mr. DuVall is also the executive producer of the acclaimed PBS series, A Force More Powerful; and co-author of a book with the same title.
The Asian Studies Center is organizing a lunch session the day of his lecture to give you the opportunity to take full advantage of Mr. DuVall’s visit. We hope you will join him for pizza and conversation about studying nonviolent conflict and working for peace, justice and nonviolent conflict resolution through internships and other activities. The session will take place at noon, October 1, in room 204 International Center. To RSVP for the Brown Bag on October 1, please let the Asian Studies Center know at asiansc@msu. edu.
The 2009 Kapur Lecture, Power and Principle in Civil Resistance: Gandhi for the 21st Century; will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 1, in room 115 International Center. We hope you will be able to attend the lecture and reception that follows.
The staff of the Asian Studies Center looks forward to your participating in these events. If you have questions or special needs, and to RSVP for the Brown Bag on October 1, please let us know at asiansc@msu. edu.
5) ENO Candidates Night, October 7
Invitation from Nancy Mahlow, ENO President
Please join me and the rest of our organization in a “meet and greet” and Q/A session with our candidates for office. This is an opportunity to speak with the candidates and ask those important questions to see just how they plan to build our city and schools. We are trying to obtain City TV to tape this event for future airing.
If you would like to submit a question or two because you might be “shy” or simply can’t make the event, feel free to send them to me and I will compile them for the moderator. I look forward to seeing you and please share with others. Remember it is your right to vote!

9) Quote of the Week
“…And thorough work, again, renders sufficient, the smallest quantity of ground to each man. And this again, conforms to what must occur in a world less inclined to wars, and more devoted to the arts of peace, than heretofore. Population must increase rapidly — more rapidly than in former times — and ere long the most valuable of all arts, will be the art of deriving a comfortable subsistence from the smallest area of soil. No community whose every member possesses this art, can ever be the victim of oppression of any of its forms. Such community will be alike independent of crowned-kings, money-kings, and
land-kings….”
