1. She’s done it again! Debbie Diesen, ANC’s Financial Manager, has had her book,“The Pout Pout Fish”, selected by the Michigan Department of History, Arts, and Libraries for the“Michigan Reads! One State, One Children’s Book Program”. Debbie will be touring the state this month visiting libraries and schools. You may recall that the “Pout Pout Fish” made Time Magazine’s Top 10 Children’s Books of 2008 as well as the New York Times Picture Book best-seller list. Clearly Debbie’s “true joy comes from writing for children”, and not, alas, in balancing our books! For more info, check out www.michigan.gov/Michiganreads.

2. ENO Candidates Night, October 7

Invitation from Nancy Mahlow, ENO President

Please join me and the rest of our organization in a “meet and greet” and Q/A session with our candidates for office.  This is an opportunity to speak with the candidates and ask those important questions to see just how they plan to build our city and schools.  We are trying to obtain City TV to tape this event for future airing.

If you would like to submit a question or two because you might be “shy” or simply can’t make the event, feel free to send them to me and I will compile them for the moderator. I look forward to seeing you and please share with others.  Remember it is your right to vote!

3. Greenation’s Youth Recycling Service Project
This MSU-based group is doing good work in the community; hope you can join them on 10/10.

Hello this is Derrell Edward Slaughter, Lansing Director of Greenation. I would like to make you aware of an exciting new initiative that our youth division is undertaking. We have developed a recycling program that will work to reduce the amount of technological waste in the greater Lansing area. We are asking for you and others to donate any old cell phones or ink cartridges to the program. All proceeds will go to the funding of future Greenation youth initiatives.

The program will formally kick off Oct. 10 from 10 AM to 2:30PM at the Lansing Convention Center. The day will begin with a door to door collection of recyclables and end with a launch party for everybody to partake in. It is suggested that all party participants bring either bring old cell phones or ink cartridges in support of the Greenation Youth Recycling Program. Radio station FM 96.5 will be present at the luncheon to provide participants with prizes and entertainment.   This launch will be in conjunction with the 2009 Michigan Powershift Conference. This conference will bring college students from all over Michigan to learn and actively engage in the green movement. Please feel free to contact me with any question about the event. We hope that you will assist Greenation in its mission of creating a sustainable society of all!

9. DESIGN LANSING Community Character Workshop

HELP TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF OUR CITY!

Sponsored by the City of Lansing Planning and Neighborhood Development Department,

Do you care about how Lansing’s natural features, buildings and public spaces, including streets, relate to one another to create neighborhoods, districts and a city where people want to live, work and spend their leisure time? If you do, you should plan to attend the initial city-wide Community Character Workshop for Design Lansing, the first comprehensive update to the city’s master plan since 1990. The meeting is scheduled for:

Thursday October 29 at the Lansing Center, rooms 203-205 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

This workshop on community character will give Lansing citizens and property owners an opportunity to learn about the factors that shape the physical form of the community and the principles for creating a quality of life that attracts and retains residents and businesses. Participants will also be asked to “vote” their preferences on different approaches for transforming some of the areas that now detract from Lansing’s appeal using hand held electronic devices that allow results to be reported immediately. The voting results will be used to help shape strategies for the future of Lansing as the planning process unfolds over the next 9-12 months. The purpose of the master plan update is to establish objectives and policies to guide Lansing’s future growth and development. It will:

Identify issues and opportunities as the basis for decision-making

Clarify and gain consensus on future goals and objectives

Establish policies to manage change and guide decisions about future land use and development

Provide the foundation for setting capital improvement priorities, revising zoning regulations and developing other implementation tools
