Edible Park
YSC enjoys gardening year-round; outside in the spring and summer, and inside the heated greenhouse in the fall and winter. Members are involved in all parts of the growing process, seeding, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and of course- eating! In 2011, members planted fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs, strawberries, and vegetables, further expanding the edibility of Hunter Park.
Peace Jam
YSC members study the Peace Jam curriculum September through April (www.peacejam.org) and explore ways to address the roots of violence to create a more peaceful community and planet. This work culminates each Spring when YSC members attend the Great Lakes Peace Jam conference in Kalamazoo and meet a Nobel Peace Laureate. Recent Nobel Laureates YSC have met include Jody Williams, Betty Williams, and Shirin Abadi.
Drum Circles
Join professors from MSU’s Community School of Music for a monthly drum circle! Sessions are held: Thursdays, 4:00-5:30 pm on January 19, February 16, March 15, April 19, May 17, and June 7, culminating with a performance at World Day on June 9, 2012.
Party Time
YSC knows how to play too! At each session, we play games, and share a healthy snack together as we get ready for the day’s agenda. We’ve also taken field trips, as a reward for community service. Some of the places we’ve visited in the past include: Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, Impression 5 Science Center, MSU Sports Games, East Lansing Aquatic Center, Michigan Historical Museum, and Uncle John’s Cider Mill.
