    Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC) is a 501(c)(3) organization in Lansing, Michigan. ANC serves as a dynamic hub where Lansing Eastside neighbors access resources to improve their health and well-being; expand their capacity to seize job and entrepreneurial opportunities; create a strong sense of place, belonging, and community pride; and build a safe, sustainable, and thriving neighborhood. Since 1999, ANC has pioneered programs in comprehensive and integrative community development.

    Program Description

    The Outreach & Engagement team is responsible for connecting neighbors and other stakeholders to resources that are related to health, housing, and social connectivity. Interns will do extensive outreach in the neighborhood, including door-to-door canvassing, appearing regularly at Eastside community events, and hosting community gatherings to link neighbors to resources and one another. To make appropriate referrals, interns will become familiar with: federal, state, and local government programs; other nonprofit and for-profit organizations that offer programming to neighbors; and ANC programs. 

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Link neighbors with both ANC programs and regional social services after assessing individual needs

    • Advocate for neighbors as an enrollment specialist with MI Bridges (Medicaid, Food Stamps, etc.) and the Ingham County Health Department (Ingham Health Plan, etc.), including providing guide-by-the-side enrollment in programs and the Gender Affirmation Project. 

    • Present at information sessions and meetings and participate in outreach events to promote ANC programs. 

    • Conduct a community assessment, including but not limited to door-to-door canvassing, surveys, and census data collection.

    Skills, Experience, & Qualifications

    • Ability to regularly lift and move up to 30 pounds

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to flex communication styles for different kinds of audiences

    • Passion for strengthening the local food system and for ANC’s mission

    • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new software

    Program Description

    The Hunter Park GardenHouse is a project of Allen Neighborhood Center, a 501(c)(3) organization in Lansing, Michigan. The GardenHouse serves as a demonstration site and hub for year-round garden education. Neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community; and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood. Since 2008, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health and become more connected with the community. We are open 5 days a week and offer a wide assortment of programs.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This person will serve as the Hunter Park GardenHouse Fellow who will:

    • Serve as Hunter Park GardenHouse shift leader 2-4 times per week (guide-by-the-side with volunteers to plant, harvest, water, weed, etc., and engage with visitors).

    • Document GardenHouse programs through social media (maintain Facebook page with photos & updates).

    • Work with the GardenHouse Director to develop and implement GardenHouse special projects (i.e. native seed library, pollinator garden, host educational workshops etc.).

    Qualifications

    • Experience and/or interest in sustainable gardening/farming.

    • Passion for strengthening the local food system and for ANC’s mission

    • Ability to regularly lift and move up to 30 pounds

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to flex communication styles for different kinds of audiences

    • Ability to function independently and in a team environment.

    • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new software

    Program Description

    ANC’s Incubator and Accelerator Kitchen program utilizes commercial shared-use kitchens to help scale production and solidify operations for new food businesses. The shared-use model lowers the cost of entry and risk, provides access to one-on-one mentorship, trains in food cost analysis and labor controls, provides food safety training and certification, and assists in building standard operating procedures. In addition to commercial kitchen space, ANC also is home to The Greatroom, a public event space that provides neighbors with a myriad of ANC programs, community events, and private rental space. 

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist Kitchen Managers with booking, invoicing, coordination and execution of events

    • Aid in development and execution of Incubator and Accelerator Kitchen programming, including cooking workshops, tasting dinners, pop-ups etc.

    • Create and develop marketing content for Kitchen Program and public events (taking photo/video during events, digital content design, flyer and material design)

    • Responsibly maintain facility standards while setting up, overseeing and tearing down events

    • Collaborating with community partners, stakeholders, etc.

    Program Description

    The Allen Farmers Market is a project of Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC), a 501(c)(3) organization in Lansing, Michigan. Since 2004, the market has served as a community hub where neighbors can find locally grown and produced foods, ready-to-eat dinner options, and a convivial atmosphere in which to socialize and build community. Breadbasket Food Pantry distributes free produce, bread, and baked goods to Eastside residents each Monday. Our pantry provides perishable goods that are often out of reach for many in the community.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Train and coordinate volunteers for the pantry and market

    • Pick up food donations from the food bank and local businesses for Breadbasket, and assist neighbors in efficiently choosing their food donations

    • Communicate with farmers, vendors, sponsors and neighbors as needed to ensure market days are successful

    • Assist with setup and tear down of the market

    • Help with the creation of promotional materials (print and digital) for the market

    • Facilitate relationships with local farmers/vendors, market patrons, and Breadbasket participants

    • Document program efficacy through surveys and evaluations

    Veggie Box is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program which allows folks in the Lansing region to enroll in a season-long subscription box to fresh, local produce. Our CSA is a multi-farm model that unites dozens of local small farms to feed a common community. We pack and distribute orders for up to 300 members per week, providing fruits, vegetables, optional add-on food products, and educational material. 

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Create written profiles of farmers, crops, vegetables, and food system issues 

    • Assist in promotion of Veggie Box (marketing, social media, graphic design)

    • Coordinate receiving, packing, inventory, and produce management

    • Document program efficacy through surveys and evaluations 

    • Send invoices and track payments

    • Assist in vendor management and customer/member relationships

    Allen Neighborhood Center youth programs are free, offer job and life skills experience, and provide gardening and nutrition education. Take Root Garden Club (ages 5-10) is held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00am-12:00pm; and the Youth Service Corps (ages 11-17) meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00am-12:00pm during the summertime.

    • Work with the Youth Programs Manager to help prepare & facilitate lessons and activities.

    • Document program efficacy through attendance records and evaluations.

    • Collaborate with other organizations on special events (field trips, special projects, etc.)

  • Food Hub Manager

    Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC) is seeking a full-time individual to help connect local farmers and food producers with buyers in this region.  The majority of the Food Hub Manager’s time will be spent managing Veggie Box, a multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.  A CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. The CSA model helps to keep sustainable farming a viable way of life for small-scale family farms that are increasingly threatened by large-scale agribusiness. Veggie Box is a multi-farm model that unites dozens of growers to feed a community of 700 members over the course of three seasons.

    Duties

    This person will serve as the Food Hub Manager and will:

    • Coordinate the Veggie Box Program – a multi-farm CSA with 700 members a year – handling logistics, marketing, and sales. 

    • Oversee the tracking of customer payments and vendor sales.

    • Develop and maintain relationships with dozens of farmers and food producers.  

    • Provide aggregation and distribution services to increase sales of regionally grown food to local buyers.

    • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, interns, and AmeriCorps Member, and one staff member.

    • Evaluate and write reports showcasing program effectiveness.

    • Write foundation, charity, and state grants as well as asks to individual and corporate donors to support and grow the program.

    Qualifications

    • High school degree or GED certificate

    • Minimum of 18 year of age, US citizen or permanent resident status

    • Commitment to serve 40 hours per week

    • Commitment to Lansing’s Eastside, its residents, stakeholders as well as strategic partners throughout the mid-Michigan region.

    • Passion for strengthening the local food system and ANC’s mission.

    • Excellent verbal, written, communication and customer service skills

    • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new software quickly.

    • Some experience with local farming/food systems preferred

    • Flexible availability required (some nights and weekends).

    • Valid Michigan driver’s license.

    • Ability to develop, implement, nurture, and evaluate programs.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Salary of $41,000-$45,000, commensurate with experience. Plus, modest benefits, including: health insurance, 3% employer match into retirement account and paid time off.

  • Financial and Business Manager

    We are seeking a dedicated, high-capacity and entrepreneurial person to oversee financial operations of Allen Neighborhood Center. The position is supervised by the Executive Director and reports to the Director and the Board. This position blends traditional financial management (e.g., bookkeeping; payroll; grants management; creating, managing and analyzing budgets) with helping to manage, monitor, and grow the social enterprises operated by Allen Neighborhood Center (farmers market, Exchange, Veggie Box, Incubator Kitchens, etc.)

    Responsibilities

    • Perform all bookkeeping tasks, including all check writing and bank deposits, for general operations and for program-specific activities.

    • Oversee budgeting and financial forecasting for ANC and its programs.

    • Preparation of monthly and annual financial reporting materials for ANC administration and Board of Directors.

    • Prepare and oversee ANC payroll, including paychecks, payroll tax and withholding payments, health insurance, and all reporting (941s, W-2s, 1099s, etc.).

    • Prepare budgets, invoices, and financial reports for all grants received by ANC.

    • Analyze costs, income, and actual performance compared to business plans.

    • Monitor internal controls, prepare for annual independent audit, coordinate audit-related activities and follow up.

    • Serve as a resource and support for other ANC staff in development of business plans, marketing strategy, and monitoring systems in areas of current and potential earned revenue across the organization.

    • Other financial management duties as assigned by the Executive Director to assist in financial oversight of the organization.

    Qualifies candidates will exhibit the following:

    • Experience in bookkeeping, budget development, payroll management.

    • Experience in business planning and business operations.

    • Demonstrated ability to conduct extensive tracking & documentation of data & budget.

    • Formal schooling and/or 3-5 years minimum of experiential knowledge in financial/business management.

    • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and follow through with details.

    • Skilled communicator (oral, written) and comfortable communicating in person, by phone, and email; superior relationship skills and follow through.

    • Creativity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and positive thinking.

    • Experience working in teams, including teams of staff, volunteers, and partners.

    • Experience in nonprofit and community-based organizations a plus.

    • Experience in food systems work a plus.

    • Experience in QuickBooks or other finance software a plus.

    • Passion for ANC’s mission and work a must.

    • Preference given to Lansing Eastside residents.
