Allen Neighborhood Center is excited to announce their award from the Consumers Energy Foundation in the amount of $10,000 which will support their Hunter Park GardenHouse’s urban growing initiatives. Since 1990, the Consumers Energy Foundation has touched countless lives and communities through its grants program, corporate giving and employee volunteer efforts. Allen Neighborhood Center is one of this year’s lucky grant recipients.
“The Consumers Energy Foundation is dedicated to planting the seeds for communities across Michigan to grow,” said Carolyn Bloodworth, secretary/treasurer of the Consumers Energy Foundation. “We are pleased to support Allen Neighborhood Center in its vital work to provide opportunities to Lansing residents.”
Since 2008, the Hunter Park GardenHouse, a project of Allen Neighborhood Center, has served as a site for innovative urban gardening/farming education. Inside their year-round greenhouse and on the acre of parkland surrounding it, high quality workshops on every aspect of small lot gardening draw Lansing neighbors and aspiring gardeners from throughout the region. A year-round Community Supported Agriculture Project (CSA) offers extraordinarily flexible payment options, including work-shares, SNAP and Double-Up Food Bucks, to low-moderate income neighbors interested in receiving a weekly box of “super-fresh and super-local, grown-in-the-neighborhood produce”. Youth enroll in Take Root (6-10 years-olds) and Youth Service Corps (11-17 year-olds) for gardening, nutrition and fitness education. These young neighbors are drawn by compelling, age-appropriate skill-building projects such as creating an Edible Landscape in Hunter Park, constructing and distributing Garden-in-a-Box kits in the neighborhood, growing food used to create healthy snacks in our commercial kitchen to sell at their market stand at the Allen Farmers Market, and conducting a Fruit Tree Census on Lansing’s Eastside.
The Consumers Energy Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Consumers Energy, providing funds for education, community, civic and cultural development, social services, the environment, and emerging issues.
